This week’s topic: CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BEST DESIGNERS

When you think of a “Designer”, when referring to apparel or accessories, two images should come to mind; 1) hot-gay-male   or    2) unbelievably stylish woman who you would murder if it meant access to her closet.

Reality = VERY rarely the case.

This is an ongoing debate I’ve had with many friends and colleagues. Why is that most designers in the mid-priced market are so average looking? I have repped many lines, clothing and accessories, over the years and it never ceased to amaze me how random designers were.  I mean, how do you even get into clothing or footwear with little to no fashion sense?  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking my hetero shoe dogs out there, but I simply have to state the obvious.

I have been questioning such designers and line builders over the years and many have one thing in common: Detachability. Straight, middle-aged, men really are the meat and potatoes of the Shoe Biz. I think it’s quite comical, but I have been doing my homework as well. They do not get attached to their “works of art” as many fashion obsessed FIDIM idiots would. It is basic business to them. They could be designing new quilt patterns for toilet paper and have the same attachment to their work. It’s all a process: design, build, and sell.  I think this is a wonderful process and see the need for such attitudes towards design. It’s really hard not to get emotional over “your babies” when one of your East Coast reps tells everyone at the sales meeting “that’s the ugliest shoe I’ve ever effing seen”. A fashion-crazed designer would have bitch slapped that rep into the next season for such blasphemy.

I’m sure there are plenty of “super dope” designers out there that think their shit doesn’t stink and their shoes are all perfect specimens of footwear.  But, to counter those freaks, there are my hetero homeboys who know that their shit does, in fact, stink. And they are perfectly OK with it.
