Footlocker says NO to failure. After a tough year, The New York based chain has developed the cure for its crisis. For management, the downturn has been a wake-up call, and an opportunity to retool FootLocker’s operations. Under Chief Executive Matthew Serra, 65, who will retire in January, the company has cut costs, culled inventory, closed stores and shored up its balance sheet, in the process delivering a lesson in how to survive a brutal bear market. Painful as it has been, all the blocking and tackling could give Foot Locker a running start once the economy starts to improve.

Collecting shoes to put together the history of braveness. Connie Ernatt grimaced as she studied the tattered remains of the boot John Galvin was wearing when old fireworks being prepared for detonation exploded prematurely. “They never found the other one,” Ernatt said softly as she recalled the blast that eventually proved fatal for Galvin in 2000. Ernatt has been collecting shoes belonging to local law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty — or at least shoes similar to what they would have worn. Molded copies of the shoes will be a featured component of the Law Enforcement Memorial of Sedgwick County, which is about to be built on the northeast corner of the City Hall grounds.
