As part of our Product Development, Design and Sourcing teams, you’ll play a key role in building JCPenney’s customer loyalty with the development of our private and exclusive brands. We strive to continually enhance our assortments to ensure that we offer styles that inspire and reflect the lifestyles of customers. Our private and exclusive brands account for nearly 50 percent of our annual revenue. In fact, we design and source 16,000 unique items each year.
BASIC FUNCTION
Leads in the creation of the original concepts that encompass style, color, and fabric for assigned brand(s), or classification by executing the brand profile and the business strategy for the season.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBLITIES
1. Leads in the creation of original concepts that encompass style, color, and fabric for assigned lines to ensure customer focused offerings that meet business requirements.
2. Shops appropriate markets, and works with the trend office and product team to conceptualize the product design for the season.
3. Supervises the initiation of product packages through working with technical designers.
4. Shops print studios and fabric mills to define newest fabric and print direction for season, and selects and approves fabric, yarn qualities, and findings for products.
5. Approves strike-offs, handlooms, and knit-downs.
6. Leads in the development and selection of artwork, prepares the flat sketch design for new products, and creates design sketches for enhancements to existing products.
7. Travels as needed to develop the product.
8. Develops and makes seasonal merchandise presentations of proposed designs, including boards and other visuals.
KEY RELATIONSHIPS
1. Works closely with Trend Managers for fashion and color trends.
2. Works closely with Product Development Director or Corporate Product Development Director, and Product Managers throughout the development process.
3. Works closely with Technical Designers to develop product packages, approve Apparel Design Appraisal Reports (ADAR), and attend fit sessions.
4. Works with CAD Designers to execute concepts into design.
Knowledge and Skills:
Education: College degree in fine arts or design, or equivalent work experience in a design related field.
Experience: 8 – 10 years’ experience in design product and fabrication knowledge.
Core Competencies: Basic working knowledge of the technical aspects of the assigned category, ability to design around concepts and to design flat sketches, technical and computer skills, design and color sense, presentation, persuasion, organization, time management, written and verbal communication.
