Lessons Learned at the Atlanta Shoe Show
by Ken Proctor
I still have yet to attend the Atlanta show, but I have heard some good things about it. I am curious to know why it was a little slower than usual…over the past couple of years it seems that show has been one to stay consistant. Anyhow, I have to chuckle at Ken’s list of things he learned while there. I can just hear the conversations now….It’s unfortunate that there are those out there who are still talking the old school salesman talk, but somethings will simply never change! That’s why we have to.

Lessons Learned at the Atlanta Shoe Show
I attended the Atlanta show a couple of weeks ago and although the show was a bit slower than usual, I did manage to learn some valuable lessons during the 3 days I was there. They are truly applicable in life:
-
When people tell you “let me be honest with you”, it means in the past, they have not been.
-
When someone tells you that this is the “God’s honest truth”, it isn’t.
-
When people tell you how successful they are, they aren’t.
-
When people say “I’ll try”, it won’t happen.
-
Don’t say “It can’t get any worse than this”! Trust me, it can ALWAYS get worse.
-
Rich makes up for stupid and ugly.
-
Common sense, common knowledge, and common courtesy is no longer common(if anyone reads this and is attending a show, ask the person who is manning the booth by himself if he wants anything for lunch).
-
When someone says “If I had a nickel for everyone of these I could have sold”, they would have about $30.
Because I had more time on my hands that desired, I decided to exercise my hearing and listening skills. I heard a lot of BS being spoken. I heard a lot of “salesman talk”. The worst part of it was, the customer knew it, but the salesman(or management type) did not. Traits such as honesty, integrity, intelligence, and success do not have to be bragged about. They show. Proof is always in the action, not the words. Results do not lie. As my Grandmother used to say: “It’s not the whistle that moves the train”!
